Regarding the July 24, 2009 capsized canoe incident:
The canoe out of Quinault, skippered by Marko, capsized as they went out the mouth of the Quinault River into the Pacific Ocean. The dense fog limited visibility and navigation throught the waves, and they capsized.
One of the pullers suffered hypothermia – not a heart issue as was feared at first.
The pullers were given emergency care and were determined to be alright.
The decision was made to trailer the canoes to Makah Nation in Neah Bay and join with the other canoes for the remainder of the Journey.
All canoes will make official canoe entry at hosting Tribal Community, Suquamish Nation, August 3, around 1pm. (See 2009 Canoe Routes page for detailed itineraries.)
